The West of England Initiative

Bristol 2050
At the December 2009
Initiative Evening, John Savage introduced members to the Bristol 2050 project. Our new project to set out
a business vision for the Bristol City region over the next 40
years. The inspiration for the project comes from the Chicago Plan,
drawn up by Burnham in 1909 under the direction of the Commercial
Club of Chicago. Their Plan provided a blueprint for the future and
a clear sense of direction for the development of the Chicago city
region – exactly what we want to achieve, from a business
perspective, in Bristol.
Our plan will provide a
clear statement about housing, jobs and infrastructure requirements
to meet the needs of the area and enable it to continue to develop
and grow as the economic powerhouse of the South West. It will
illustrate what this growth would look like, where it would go and
how it can be achieved.
The development of this vision is
exactly what the Initiative was set up to do. It’s what Initiative
members have been asking for and are interested in and it is at the
very heart of what the Initiative is about – providing leadership
to fill a void, ensuring the business voice is heard and promoting
the sub region as “the” place to do business and a great place to
live. It is about joining up plans and strategies and having a
comprehensive view of the future, without getting too bogged down
in red tape and bureaucracy.
The Initiative is a
business leadership team that exists to enable the business
community to play a part in influencing the way the West of England
is shaped, managed and developed. It provides an effective link
between the private and public sector to ensure that the interests
of commerce are taken into account when key strategic decisions are
made which will affect the future.
The organisation evolved from the
Bristol Initiative, which was set up in 1988 to provide a focus for
informed debate and to foster a spirit of partnership, particularly
between the private sector and those in local governance. Its
purpose is as relevant today, as it was then - to improve and
enhance the community in which business operates.
